Volunteer Spotlight The Emergency and Practical Assistance Services Program of The Salvation Army is an incredibly busy place. People, many of them in crisis, walk through the door every day seeking assistance with a myriad of issues. With the staff of the department working to full capacity, we had a need for reliable, diligent volunteers to aid in the management of the food pantry. Out of retirement, the Syracuse Corps of Retired Executives referred Tony Ebersole to us as a volunteer consultant. Tony began volunteering in 1999 and still volunteers twice a week, really serving in a management capacity for us. Tony manages all ordering and stocking of the food pantry shelves. He maintains and rotates stock, ensuring utilization of all food pantry items. Through his budget monitoring, he has been able to increase the quality of the food we offer our clients. He trains other volunteers to ensure the efficiency of the pantry and also picks up daily donations from local supermarkets. He uses these donations to deliver snacks to other programs in our agency each week. Tony developed the ‘service style’ distribution process that is currently used in our pantry. This allows clients to ‘shop’ for and select the items that their family prefers, offering a higher level of dignity. He has also established guidelines for food distribution dependent on family size. His leadership, knowledge and abilities are vital to our providing these critical services. Tony completes the Emergency and Practical Assistance Services Team. His contributions to the department through management of the food pantry are immeasurable. His continued dedication is truly an inspiration to our clients, staff and other volunteers.
Tony was awarded with The Salvation Army of the Syracuse Area’s ‘Can Do’ Award in May 2005 during National Salvation Army Week.
